Tamil Nadu actor Vijay's fans were in for a surprise today. However, what started as breaking news lost its sheen by the end of the day.

In the morning, news broke out that asocial welfare organised, associated with Vijay, is registered with the Election Commission. As soon as this report hit social media platforms, speculations about Vijay's entry into politics started doing the rounds.

But they dried down after the actor as well as his father issued clarifications.

On Thursday morning, source-based reports in local media said that Vijay Makkal Iyakkam - Vijay's social welfare organisation - is in process of being registered as a political party by the name of 'All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam'.

Truth

All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam is a political party registered with the EC, but that's where the truth in that rumour ends.

Is Vijay associated with a political party?

Yes and no. All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam is the political party that evolved from Vijay's social welfare organisation Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, but the actor is not associated with it.

Vijay's father issues clarification

Vijay's father SA Chandrashekar has clarified that the fact that the welfare organisation is registered as a political party doe snot mean his son is taking a political plunge.

Speaking to India Today TV, SA Chandrashekar said, “In 1993, I started a fan club for Vijay and five years later it was made into welfare association. There were many youngsters in the group and we wanted to turn them into responsible individuals and few years later I made it into a people welfare forum. This was done to help people. For the last 25 years, these people have been doing without any expectations. Now, I have registered it with the EC to motivate people to do more good work.”

Is this Vijay’s political entry? “Well I can’t answer for Vijay. He is 46 years old and I can’t decide for him,” added Vijay’s father, who also clarified that the superstar has nothing to do with the party.

“The decision to register the forum was only with the intention of motivating the people within the forum to work harder,” concluded SA Chandrashekar a producer-director in the Tamil film industry.

Vijay denies entry into politics

In a statement released by his public relations officer, actor Vijay denied any connection to the party and stated that the party was registered by his father SA Chandrashekar. Vijay, in his statement, said that the fans should understand that they don’t have to be associated or work for the party and added that no one should use his name, picture, or All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam to create any controversy. "Those who are involved in this, will have to face legal consequences," the statement said.

Over the last couple of years, Vijay’s entry into politics has been a topic of discussion. He had even locked horns with the BJP on multiple instances. His films like Sarkar and Mersal criticised the central and state government on issues like GST, corruption, cash for vote, health care system.

BJP leader H Raja had once tried to create controversy over Vijay’s religion. H Raja had tweeted Vijay’s voter ID which gives his full name as Joseph Vijay.

In the past, Vijay has also commented on controversial topics in the state like Jallikatu and NEET.

There have been multiple speculations about Vijay’s entry into politics, especially with a lack of clarity on Rajini’s political movement.

CM E Palaniswami, while reacting to a question on Vijay’S political entry, said, “It is a democratic country and anyone can join politics. If actor Vijay wants to enter politics he can enter too.”
